How a Midsized University begins to integrate Trauma Informed Care into Field Education

Poster will outline SAMSHA’s (2023) 6 principles of trauma informed care with an additional two for eight principles suggested by Imad (2022) in “Trauma-Informed Pedagogies”. Viewers will learn how each principle is incorporated into a field class and recommendations for changes based on feedback from students.

Learning Objectives:

At the end of this session, attendees should be able to:
  1. Upon completion, the participants will be able to understand how the original six principles of Trauma Informed Care are expanded to include eight principles suggested by Imad (2022) for trauma informed teaching pedagogy.
  2. Upon completion, the participant will be able to evaluate ways that trauma informed teaching pedagogy raises awareness for students about secondary trauma, self-care, compassion fatigue, and burn-out. Including an outline of the activities and discussions that were held in the field seminar class.
  3. Upon completion, the participant will be able to utilize student and Instructor qualitative feedback on early adoption of trauma informed principles from the trauma informed teaching pedagogy to inform the adoption of activities and discussion into social work field classes.
