Disenfranchised grief, grief that goes unacknowledged due to the stigma surrounding a death, is an understudied aspect of the overdose crisis. As a result, this project conducted a systematic review of the literature on disenfranchised grief to highlight existing knowledge, practice skills, and gaps to better support affected communities.
Learning Objectives:
At the end of this session, attendees should be able to:
Recognize and define the concept of disenfranchised grief, specifically as it applies to individuals experiencing grief after drug-related deaths (DRD).
Understand the current landscape of literature on disenfranchised grief and DRD, including interventions to address and prevent the disenfranchisement of grief in social work education and practice.
Apply evidence-based practices from the literature to effectively teach about disenfranchised grief and intervene with individuals experiencing this grief, to reduce mental health symptoms associated with the grief process.
