This study compares anti-Asian hate incidents (AAHIs) reported by news media and law enforcement agencies during the COVID-19 pandemic. It examines reporting discrepancies, geographic variations, and differences in incident types and locations. Findings call for greater accountability in law enforcement reporting and community-driven mechanisms to capture unreported incidents.
Learning Objectives:
At the end of this session, attendees should be able to:
To identify and assess discrepancies in anti-Asian hate incidents reporting between media and law enforcement data, understanding potential biases and inconsistencies in documentation.
To evaluate state and county-level variations in anti-Asian hate incidents reporting, including differences in incident types and locations, to understand the distribution and nature of reported hate incidents.
To translate findings into actionable advocacy by promoting standardized hate crime reporting, enhancing community-led response mechanisms, and strengthening trauma-informed support for Asian American Pacific Islanders communities affected by hate crimes.
