Consent and decision-making for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities is a critical issue that intersects with social justice. Social work practitioners and educators need to understand and consider this in practice. Key points will include: historical violations of autonomy, protectionism, capacity to consent, and social justice implications.

At the end of this session, attendees should be able to:

Participants will understand the importance and wide-ranging applications of consent and decision making for adults with IDD.
Participants will learn about evidence-based methods for helping adults with IDD to make informed decisions.
Using cultural humility and a social justice framework, participants will consider diverse perspectives on consent for adults with IDD.
